Mirror World - A short story

Mirror World

The air was thick with the sound of children’s laughter and the sweet chiming of the carousel music.
"Mummy I need to go to the toilet". Said Sarah
"Ok darling I’ll wait for you here". Said Sarah’s Mum.
Sarah came out of the cubicle and washed her hands. She looked at her reflection in the mirror and noticed the surface of the mirror was gently rippling. ‘That’s strange’ thought Sarah as she reached out her hand to touch the surface of the mirror and found she could not touch it, her hand carried on through the surface. Sarah was a curious child so she decided to climb through. Everything was exactly the same on the other side so Sarah turned round to go back through and found that the mirror was solid. Did I just imagine that ‘ Thought Sarah. She decided she had just imagined it and left to join her Mum.
Sarah went back to where her Mum said she would be waiting, but she wasn’t there. She started searching frantically.
"Mum, Mum where are you" She shouted.
Sarah searched everywhere for her and was feeling very tired and it was starting to get dark. She sat down and looking up at the sky she noticed that the bright sunshine had been covered by dark oppressive thick cloud filled sky. She realised that the sky had been like this ever since she had left the toilets. She couldn't find her Mum and didn’t know what to do. ‘Mum always told me if I lose her I need to tell someone’ She thought. So she went to find someone who could help.
"Excuse me". Said Sarah
"Yes little Miss". Said the man in the ticket office.
"I’ve lost my Mum and I’ve looked for everywhere, she wasn’t where she said she would be" She said frantically.
"Alright Miss calm down we’ll help find your Mum. What’s your name". Asked the man.
"Sarah Parker".
"Please could the Mother of Sarah Parker, I repeat Sarah Parker come to the ticket office". Announced the man to the whole park.
Sarah waited but her Mum didn’t come. The man announced it several more times, but nothing.
"Little Miss, I’ll call the police they’ll have to help you we’re closing soon". Said the man.
Soon the police came.
"Hello, it’s Sarah is it?"
Sarah nodded.
"Right then I need you to tell me what happened and we’ll see what we can do". Said the Policeman.
He took her name and address and a brief description of what had happened.
"Right then Sarah, what I shall do is take you home, maybe your Mum has gone home without you". Said the Policeman
"Why would she do that? She wouldn’t do that not to me" Cried Sarah.
Sarah climbed into the back of the police car feeling very upset that her Mum could have gone home without her. She stared out of the window as they drove past the houses. It was still light and the sky was broody, but there was no wind. The streets were empty and there were no other cars on the road, everywhere seemed abandoned and still. An eerie feeling come over Sarah and she shuddered at the emptiness of the world.
Soon they pulled up to her house. It didn’t look right. It was dull almost drained of its entire colour and it looked so neat and perfect. It looked unreal almost like it was a picture, and the thick black clouds hung over it so still.
"Right Sarah, come on". Said they Policeman as he opened her door.
Sarah stepped out and they walked up the path to the door and knocked. After a short time the door opened and there stood an elderly lady.
"Could I speak to a Mrs Parker please". Said the policeman.
"Sorry, but they is no one here called Mrs Parker, it’s just me here". Said the old lady.
"Do you know of a Mrs Parker in this street?" Asked the policeman.
"No sorry I don’t" She replied
"Sarah do you know this lady?" Asked the Policeman.
"No I don’t, it doesn’t even look my house". Said Sarah.
"Are you sure you’ve given me the right address Sarah?"
"Yes 28 Gulls Avenue, and this is 28 Gulls Avenue". Said Sarah as she began to cry.
"We’ll have to go back to the station and find somewhere for you to stay".
Again Sarah climbed into the back of the police car and cried. She didn’t understand what was happening, and then she remembered the mirror. ‘Yes the mirror’ She thought ‘I have to get back through the mirror.
At the police station Sarah waited in a small room. After a while a woman came into the room and sat down next to Sarah. She looked familiar but Sarah couldn’t place her.
"Hello Sarah, I’m Gloria. How are you". She said.
"I can’t find my Mum". Sarah cried.
"It’s OK Sarah, these lovely policemen are going to find your Mum, but until they do would you like to come and stay with me?"
"Ok". Said Sarah.
Gloria signed some papers and took her to a car outside. It was still light and overcast. ‘Surely it must be dark by now’ Thought Sarah.
They pulled up to a big house and went inside. Gloria introduced her to all the other children who were staying at the house. There were twenty altogether all different ages.
"This is Claire she is also eleven so I thought you might like to share a room with her". Said Gloria.
"We better get you something to eat". Said Gloria.
Sarah sat at the table next to Claire and Gloria brought them all sandwiches.
"So what’s your story then?" Claire asked Sarah.
"My Mum has gone missing and my house has changed and I don’t even think I’m in the right place". Said Sarah.
"What do you mean?" Asked Claire.
"Well I mean everything seems different than before I lost my Mum, it’s like I’m in a different world and I don’t recognise anyone".
"Hey, don’t worry. It felt like that when I first came here all strange and weird but I made friends and it’s alright now". Said Claire
"Do you see your parents?" Asked Sarah.
"No. No one here ever sees their parents, not for ages, then one day they’ll come back to get us". Said Claire.
They finished their sandwiches and went upstairs to go to bed.
"It’s been light for ages". Said Sarah to Claire.
"The weather never changes here, it never gets dark or really light". Said Claire.
"So you know where we are then". Said Sarah
"Ugh". Said Claire.
"Is it another dimension? I came through the mirror in the toilets and I need to go back". Said Sarah.
"What do you mean go back, you can’t go back you just have to stay and wait". Said Claire
"Wait for what?" Asked Sarah.
"The rest of your family of course". She said as if Sarah was stupid for not knowing.
Sarah didn’t want to wait but she was so tired. It felt like she had been awake for days and she fell into a deep sleep.
Sarah was stood in the toilets at the fairground. She could see her Mum through the mirror. She climbed through to get to her Mum but as soon as she climbed through her Mum was on the other side of the mirror on another wall opposite. She climbed through again and again faster and faster but she could not reach her Mum. She stopped running and went through a side door. Sarah found herself back in the room in which she was sleeping and saw herself asleep in the bed. A brilliant white light surrounded the bed and rose up through the ceiling. The bed started to descend into a newly formed black hole beneath it and disappeared into the darkness. Sarah leaned over the hole and saw black menacing darkness. The darkness pulled her down into the hole and she fell. She screamed in terror as she fell. She had been falling for so long it felt like she had fallen out of time and she was no longer scared as it felt there was nothing to break her fall. She closed her eyes and then woke up in the room that she had fallen asleep in.
Claire was sleeping in the bed opposite her; she went over to her and shook her gently.
"Claire, Claire wake up". She said quietly.
"What is it?" Mumbled a sleepy Claire
"I need to ask you something". Said Sarah.
"Ok". Said Claire.
"How did you get here in this world? Did you come through a mirror?" Asked Sarah.
"No. I was in hospital and some people came and told me I was better now and I could go. They brought me here and told me to wait for my parents to come and get me." Said Claire.
"So you have no idea what this place is then?" Said Sarah.
"Yes I do, it’s the place where we wait". Said Claire.
"Well I don’t want to wait I’m going to find my Mum". Declared Sarah.
"But you can’t go back". Insisted Claire.
Sarah got dressed and climbed out of the window. She didn’t know the way to the fairground and there was no one around to ask so Sarah started walking. She had been walking for ages and still hadn’t seen a soul. Then she spotted a sign that said; Amusement Park 1 Mile. She started running in the direction the sign pointed to. It wasn’t long before she spotted the entrance to the fairground and kept on running till she got to the ticket office. The ticket office was empty and the doors were open so Sarah walked straight in. On entering the park she noticed it was totally abandoned and still. It looked like a picture of a run down park that hadn’t been used for an age. The rides were rusting and colourless and in terrible disrepair.
Sarah approached the door of the toilets and opened the door. She stepped inside and saw her Mum in the mirror. She ran over to the mirror and tried to climb through but she couldn’t. She bashed the mirror with her fists.
"Mum, Mum it’s me" Shouted Sarah.
Her Mum didn’t hear her; she was looking down at the floor screaming. Sarah looked down and saw the horror at which her Mum was screaming. It was Sarah’s bloody body lay cold and still on the floor.
Sarah felt a hand on her shoulder. She turned around and saw Gloria and Claire.
"It’s alright Sarah this is your home now". Said Gloria reassuringly.
"But what about my Mum". Cried Sarah.
"Don’t worry you’ll see her again one day, when it’s her time". Said Gloria.
They left the fairground and starting driving back to the house.
"Gloria when you came to the police station I thought I knew you from somewhere". Said Sarah.
"Yes you do, I used to babysit for you Mum when you were little, until I had my accident". Said Gloria.
They continued the rest of the journey in silence. All Sarah wanted was her Mum and she wondered how long it would be before she would see her again.
A few months passed and everyday was the same. It was so empty and indifferent. Nothing changed and hardly anyone spoke they were all just waiting. There was a knock at the door. ‘I wonder who’s going this time’ thought Sarah.
"Sarah". Said a familiar voice.
"Mum". Cried Sarah.
She ran up to her and they hugged for ages and ages both crying.
"I’ve come to take you home". Said Sarah’s Mum.
"But someone lives there". Said Sarah.
"Not our house but somewhere better by the sea and the sun is always bright and it’s where we belong, together".
"Does that mean you’re dead too?" Asked Sarah.
"No. I’m more alive then ever now I have you".

No home for a fairy

No home for a fairy, originally uploaded by Human*Bean.

There is no room in our hearts for a fairy
The world is bleak, cold and scarey
Landscaped gardens, grey concrete streets
No more enchantment will you meet
Left out in the cold, growing old
No more stories to be told
Televisions, gadgets and computer games
A lifestyle that will rot your brains
No time left for magic and imagination
We're growing into a cold, selfish nation
So if you find you're all alone
Why not make your heart a fairy home

Money Is The Reason - A Poem

Money is the reason
The world is raped dry
A consuming monster
That will make the world die

Money is the reason
There is so much greed
Indulged by the privileged
When there are people in need

Money is the reason
You are only worth its sum
If you don't have any
Then you're called scum

Money is the reason
There are unnecessary deaths
Stolen from your very hand
As you take your last breath

Money is the reason
People are torn apart
Following incentives
Instead of following the heart

Money is the reason
There are people like me
Who'd rather see it burn
And set the world free

It's funny I wrote this a couple of years ago and realised how anti-capitalist it makes me sound. I'm not anti-capitalist at all, but I felt inspired to write this because of the way some people view money and do things for money that they wouldn't otherwise. After all money is just bits of paper.

Break free from TV

Break free from TV, originally uploaded by Human*Bean.

Last year while out on a walk on the moors, I came across a smashed up television. I thought it would make a great picture, so I took a few. At the time I had got rid of my TV licence in protest of the really dumbed down crap programming, and for ruining Dr Who. I am glad to say I have not watched it since.

I decided to digitally alter one of the photo's and this is the result. Burn TV Burn, and break free and find more entertainment in reality. That's why I'm online now. At least the internet is interactive and not just a propaganda box to feed us bullshit everyday. The TV is no longer the God of the masses, there are better things to do.

It reminds me of a brilliant song by the beatnigs. TV the drug of the nation

The Foolish Heart A Poem

Longing for a sweet embrace
Seeking warmth from burning fires
Buying into fake ideals
Walking blindly into men's desires

Falling into a fatal trap
Accepting offers from a decaying mind
Being lured into a world of pain
Following thoughts of a heart so blind

Smelling sickly remains of a sordid moment
Tasting the dust of a bitter thought
Drowning out pain in a pool of poison
Repeating the cycle in which you are caught

Mental Illness A poem

If I was not pushed
I would not fall
If I was not strangled
By hands so cruel
If I was no given
A life so bleak
And all this abuse
I would not need to speak
If I was not dealt
This terrible hand
Maybe I wouldn’t empathise
I just wouldn’t understand
Why am I labelled?
With words so untrue
If it happened to you
Then you would be labelled too
All you who’ve had
A happy life
With loving parents
Friends, husband and wife
I forgive you
For hating me
Because you don’t understand
The blackness in me
